Portside at Pier I -East Boston
Client: Skanska USA
Project Completed: Ongoing
Boston Environmental is presently working at the Pier I site in East Boston providing various remediation services for this brownfields site. The project, proposed by developer Roseland Property Company, will bring 490 residential units, of which 58 will be affordable. Additionally, the project will include marine/shipyard uses as well as public waterfront access, a day-care center and retail and restaurant space.
The Portside at Pier One project consists of a mixed-use development of three Massport-owned parcels, known as Pier 1, Pier 5 and the East Boston Shipyard, located along the East Boston waterfront. The Portside Site comprises a total of 26 acres of waterfront land and piers extending into Boston Harbor. The project includes the construction of eight buildings to contain the residential units (314 condominiums and 176 rental apartments), together with the day care center, retail and restaurant uses and a health club.
Boston Environmental’s work includes asbestos and lead paint abatement of various buildings on the property that are to be demolished. We also completed pre-characterization of the soils to be excavated from the site and developed a soils management plan for the excavation, treatment transportation and disposal of an estimated 35,000 tons of urban fill material. Soils considered hazardous due to leachable levels of lead were treated by Boston Environmental using the patented FESI-BONDTM process, allowing the soil to be disposed of as non-hazardous waste.
